In a dramatic escalation, at least seven Ukrainian drones targeted the Russian city of Kazan early Saturday, leaving three injured and causing significant damage to residential buildings.
The strikes, described as the most severe on Kazan since the onset of the war, began in the early hours, with two drones slamming into a towering 37-storey apartment building in the city center, according to the Telegram channel SHOT. The assaults, spaced roughly an hour apart, shattered the morning calm, leaving debris strewn across the streets.
Independent outlet ASTRA reported three powerful explosions, one of which involved a drone crashing into the roof of a four-storey building. Dramatic footage shared by the outlet captured the chilling moment of impact, a stark reminder of the growing reach of the conflict.
In response to the chaos, Kazan’s airport temporarily halted operations to ensure safety, while local schools were evacuated as a precaution, Russian media outlet RBC reported. Meanwhile, Tatarstan’s Premier Alexey Pesoshin inspected the damage firsthand, as confirmed by the state news agency TASS.
This attack comes amid a surge in Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian soil, with Kazan, over 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, increasingly in the crosshairs. April marked the start of this alarming trend when a drone strike on a dormitory in Tatarstan left 13 injured.
Saturday’s strike underscores a widening conflict that continues to test the resilience of cities far removed from the battlefield, as the shadow of war stretches ever deeper into Russian territory.
