UN Experts: Israel Must Face Consequences

GENEVA – A group of UN experts has stated that Israel must be held accountable for undermining international law in its ongoing military campaign, which has caused widespread civilian suffering. They emphasized that international humanitarian law is designed to protect civilians and limit warfare tactics, yet Israel has consistently violated these principles.

In their statement, the experts accused Israel of committing “crimes against humanity,” including murder, torture, sexual violence, forced displacement, and war crimes such as indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. They also highlighted Israel’s targeting of humanitarian workers, medical facilities, and journalists, as well as its use of starvation as a weapon of war.

The experts pointed out that Israel’s actions, particularly in northern Gaza, breach its obligations as an occupying power under international law. They condemned the siege on Gaza and attacks on shelters and hospitals, accusing Israel of seeking to permanently displace the local population and potentially annex Gaza.

Despite these violations, Israel faces little accountability, the experts noted, largely due to the protection it receives from its allies. They warned that Israel’s continued impunity sends a dangerous message, undermining the authority of international law. The experts stressed the need for independent investigations and for Israel’s leaders to face consequences for their actions.
