US Calls for Global Support in Syria’s Transition and Reconstruction
Washington Urges International Assistance
The United States on Wednesday urged the global community to support Syria’s political transition and reconstruction efforts. US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack addressed the UN Security Council, calling on nations to contribute to rebuilding the war-torn country.
Barrack noted that Syria has experienced significant changes over the past 15 months, including the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime, the establishment of a new government, and unprecedented diplomatic breakthroughs.
Refugees Return Home
Highlighting a major humanitarian milestone, Barrack said that over two million refugees and internally displaced people have returned to their homes. He added that many families will celebrate Eid al-Fitr in Syria for the first time in years, contributing to the nation’s recovery.
“These returns allow Syrians to actively participate in rebuilding their country,” he said.
Sanctions Relief and Opportunities
Barrack cited recent sanctions relief measures, including the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2799 and the lifting of restrictions on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. These actions, he said, “have unlocked opportunities for Syrians not only to survive but to thrive.”
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, previously a prominent armed group opposing Assad’s forces, is now under the leadership of Ahmad al-Shara following Assad’s ouster. Resolution 2799, adopted in November 2025, emphasizes Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
Call for Continued Support
Barrack urged Security Council members and other nations to back the Syrian government during its transition. He encouraged support in areas such as counterterrorism, reconstruction, and the repatriation of third-country nationals from camps and detention facilities.
“The United States is proud of what the Syrian people and their government have achieved since December 2024,” he said, pledging continued assistance to help Syria become “a beacon of stability abroad and an exemplar of peace, unity, and tolerance at home.”
US Leadership in the Council
The United States currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the UN Security Council for March, playing a leading role in discussions on Syria’s future.
