US Holds Annual Counterterrorism Security Summit

Officials Strengthen Homeland Defense Against Terrorism

Senior US military and intelligence officials convened in Colorado this week for the third annual USNORTHCOM Counterterrorism Summit to examine changing terrorist threats and improve national security measures.

The summit was jointly chaired on Thursday by Gen. Gregory Guillot, head of NORAD and US Northern Command, and Adm. Frank Bradley, commander of US Special Operations Command. The meeting took place at Peterson Space Force Base.

Representatives from several US government departments and security agencies attended the gathering. These included the National Security Council, National Counterterrorism Center, Homeland Security Council and federal law enforcement organizations.

Participants discussed traditional and emerging terrorist challenges, better intelligence exchange and coordinated strategies to prevent extremist networks from threatening US territory.

Gen. Guillot emphasized that protecting the United States requires more than military strength. He highlighted the need to combine intelligence capabilities, law enforcement, legal frameworks, operational preparedness and international cooperation.

Officials also explored ways to improve collaboration between civilian and military institutions, establish common security priorities and address weaknesses in the country’s multi-layered homeland defense arrangements.

Meanwhile, Adm. Bradley stressed that terrorism continues to pose serious risks to American citizens and US interests, both domestically and internationally.
