The Trump administration plans to end long-standing US security assistance programs in Europe, including initiatives designed to strengthen the continent’s eastern flank against potential Russian threats, according to media reports.
This decision could affect hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid that some of NATO’s most vulnerable members depend on, the Washington Post reported on Friday.
The Baltic Security Initiative, which funds military infrastructure and training in Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia, is among the programs set for suspension.
Although these countries spend a high percentage of their GDP on defense, their relatively small economies make US financial support particularly vital.
David Baker, the Pentagon’s director for Europe and NATO policy, briefed European defense officials last week on the plan, citing changes in the administration’s priorities, according to sources familiar with the matter.
