The United States stated on Monday that it seeks a quick resolution to the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict and emphasized the need to enforce a UN resolution mandating the withdrawal of Hezbollah from southern Lebanon. This statement comes as Israeli forces intensify their military actions in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah-linked financial entities while continuing operations in Gaza.
US envoy Amos Hochstein, visiting Beirut, expressed that it is in the best interest of the Lebanese people to resolve the conflict swiftly and highlighted the importance of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which aimed to stabilize the region after the 2006 war. However, he noted that insufficient progress has been made in implementing this resolution.
With Israel expanding its military campaign from Gaza into Lebanon, recent airstrikes have resulted in civilian casualties and significant infrastructure damage. The escalation has raised concerns about broader regional instability, particularly as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans a visit to the Middle East to pursue a ceasefire in Gaza amidst ongoing tensions with Iran and Hezbollah.
