Vietnam secured their third ASEAN Championship title on Sunday with a hard-fought 5-3 aggregate victory over defending champions Thailand in Bangkok. The dramatic clash at Rajamangala Stadium saw Vietnam edge out their rivals despite a spirited fight from Thailand.
The match kicked off with Pham Tuan Hai giving Vietnam an early advantage in the 8th minute, only for Thailand’s Ben Davis to equalize in the 28th minute. The game took another twist in the 64th minute when Supachok Sarachat gave Thailand the lead, but Vietnam responded swiftly. An own goal by Thailand’s Pansa Hemviboon in the 82nd minute reignited Vietnam’s hopes, and Nguyen Hai Long sealed the victory with a stunning long-range strike.
Things took a turn for the worse for Thailand when Weerathep Pomphan was sent off in the 75th minute, leaving the defending champions with 10 men for the remainder of the match. Vietnam’s resilience shone through as they fought until the final whistle.
This victory not only secured Vietnam their third ASEAN Cup, but it also marked a historic first win on foreign soil. The triumph adds to their previous titles in 2008 and 2018, cementing Vietnam’s place as a powerhouse in Southeast Asian football. The team’s triumph is a testament to their determination and skill on the regional stage.
