Vinicius named FIFA Best Player of 2024

In a dazzling ceremony in Doha, Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid was named FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year, while Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati claimed her second consecutive FIFA Best Women’s Player award.

Vinicius, who finished second in this year’s Ballon d’Or, was deeply emotional as he accepted the honor, reflecting on his humble beginnings in Brazil. “It’s impossible to think of being here,” he said, thanking his family, teammates, and coach Carlo Ancelotti. The 24-year-old Brazilian forward played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League double, netting 24 goals and providing 11 assists in 39 matches. His standout performance in the Champions League, including scoring in the final and bagging crucial goals against Bayern Munich, cemented his place as one of the game’s finest.

Bonmati, 26, dominated the women’s football scene in 2023, leading Barcelona to a historic continental quadruple, while also claiming the Women’s Nations League with Spain. In a video message from Barcelona’s Olympic stadium, Bonmati expressed her pride, reflecting on a season that saw her lift the Spanish league, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa de Espana, and Women’s Champions League. Her performance in the final against Lyon, where she scored and was named player of the match, was a highlight of her year.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho won the prestigious Puskas Award for the best goal of the year, earning recognition for his sensational bicycle kick against Everton.
