US Court Freezes Sanctions Against Francesca Albanese Amid Gaza Rights Dispute
A US court has temporarily suspended sanctions imposed on UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, marking a significant legal development in the growing international debate surrounding Gaza and human rights advocacy.
Albanese announced the decision on social media platform X, calling the ruling a victory for freedom of speech and global justice efforts. Quoting the judge’s remarks, she emphasized that protecting free expression remains firmly in the public interest.
The Italian human rights expert gained worldwide attention after repeatedly criticizing Israeli military policies in Gaza and supporting accountability measures through the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Last year, Washington imposed sanctions on Albanese, accusing her of encouraging ICC investigations involving American and Israeli officials. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the move by alleging that Albanese was conducting a political and economic campaign targeting both nations.
The dispute intensified after Albanese released a controversial report naming major multinational corporations that allegedly contributed to Israeli activities in occupied Palestinian territories. The report referenced technology giants such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Palantir Technologies, claiming their services and technologies supported surveillance operations, military systems and infrastructure connected to the occupation.
The court’s suspension of the sanctions is expected to reignite global discussions surrounding international law, freedom of expression and accountability linked to the ongoing Gaza conflict.
