A missing kayaker from Wisconsin, Ryan Borgwardt, was found to have faked his death after disappearing on August 12. Initially presumed drowned, Borgwardt’s belongings were found, but suspicions arose when his name was checked. Investigators discovered Borgwardt had a second passport, cleared his laptop’s hard drive, inquired about moving money abroad, and purchased airline gift cards. He was also in contact with a woman in Uzbekistan. The sheriff is now urging him to return to his family. The search, which cost significant resources, has shocked both the family and the nonprofit that helped in the search. Investigations are ongoing to identify any crimes and pursue restitution.
