Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for renewed Palestine Israel peace negotiations, saying that a two state solution remains the appropriate path toward resolving the longstanding Palestinian issue.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II, who was completing a week long state visit to China. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Xi said the Palestinian issue remains central to the wider Middle East crisis.
He outlined several principles for achieving a lasting settlement. These include pursuing a political solution, supporting the establishment of two states, restarting direct peace negotiations and working toward the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
Xi also emphasized that Palestinians should play the central role in governing their own territory. He said the principle of Palestinians governing Palestine should guide the administration of the West Bank and the reconstruction of Gaza after the war.
The Chinese leader also called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to strengthen efforts to protect civilians, facilitate humanitarian aid and prevent further humanitarian suffering.
Xi further stressed the importance of fairness, justice and international law, arguing that the international community should address both the immediate consequences and underlying causes of the conflict in order to achieve a comprehensive and lasting solution.
During discussions on China Jordan relations, Xi called for stronger strategic trust, deeper economic cooperation and closer coordination between the two countries. He said stronger bilateral ties could contribute to peace, stability and prosperity across the region.
China is currently Jordan’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $6.7 billion. King Abdullah’s visit was his ninth trip to China and his first since 2015. During the visit, he travelled to Shanghai and Shenzhen before heading to Beijing, where he met senior Chinese officials and business representatives.
