Yemeni government forces have reportedly captured dozens of Houthi fighters during clashes in Al Hudaydah province, according to a government official.
Fayyad al-Numan, an official at Yemen’s Information Ministry, said government troops detained dozens of Houthi members during fighting in Al-Jarahi district in southern Al Hudaydah. The Houthis had not issued an immediate response to the claim.
Yemen’s official SABA news agency later reported that government forces had completely regained control of Hays district after retaking surrounding rural areas. Military sources also said government troops had recovered positions near the Al-Barh junction in western Taiz and advanced as Houthi fighters withdrew.
Hays is considered strategically important because it connects Al Hudaydah and Taiz in western Yemen with Ibb in the central part of the country.
Earlier, government-aligned forces said they had destroyed two Houthi attack drones in Taiz province.
The latest developments come amid renewed fighting on several fronts in Yemen. Reciprocal attacks have increased since July, ending a period of relative calm that had followed a UN-supported ceasefire agreement in April 2022.
The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and several other areas since 2014, while Yemen’s internationally recognized government and its allied forces maintain control over large parts of the south, east and west.
