RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Rio Grande City Port of Entry made a significant drug bust this weekend, seizing more than $3 million worth of cocaine in a single operation.
The incident occurred on August 24 when CBP officers at the Rio Grande City International Bridge stopped a tractor-trailer hauling a shipment of charcoal for a routine inspection. The truck was referred for secondary inspection, where officers utilized advanced technology and a CBP canine unit to thoroughly examine the vehicle.
During the inspection, officers discovered 100 packages hidden within the trailer, containing a total of 228 pounds of cocaine. The seized narcotics are estimated to have a street value of $3,044,859.
Port Director Rogelio Olivares praised the officers’ diligence, stating, “Our frontline officers continue to exercise vigilance in the cargo environment, and their inspection skill coupled with technology and our canine unit all contributed to this significant seizure. Seizures like these exemplify CBP’s commitment to advancing our border security mission while facilitating lawful trade and travel.”
The cocaine was confiscated by CBP, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents are now investigating the incident. This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of CBP to secure the nation’s borders and prevent illegal narcotics from entering the United States.–News Desk
