Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth welcomed the 63rd United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) delegates and their military mentors to the Pentagon, concluding an immersive week in Washington, D.C. The prestigious program, established in 1962, selects 104 exceptional high school students annually, offering them firsthand exposure to federal leadership.
Addressing the young leaders, Hegseth applauded their achievements and underscored the value of service. “Leadership isn’t confined to one path,” he remarked, highlighting opportunities beyond the military. He urged students to solidify their values, emphasizing that strong personal foundations pave the way for impactful service.
Alliyah Regala, student council president at EJ King Middle High School in Japan, found the experience transformative. Meeting officials in person, she realized that leaders, despite public portrayals, are driven by a shared commitment to the nation.
Emily Wheeler, a junior at Stuttgart High School in Germany, echoed similar sentiments, recognizing the complexities of leading a diverse department like the Pentagon.
