Iran’s Supreme Leader Rejects U.S. Demand to Halt Uranium Enrichment
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, announced on Wednesday that giving up uranium enrichment would be entirely against Iran’s national interests. His statement directly dismisses a key U.S. demand in ongoing nuclear negotiations aimed at resolving a long-running dispute over Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Negotiators have completed five rounds of talks to revive international agreements designed to limit Iran’s uranium enrichment. However, several critical issues remain unresolved. Iran insists on maintaining enrichment operations within its own territory and refuses to transfer its existing stockpile of highly enriched uranium abroad—a material that could potentially be used for nuclear weapons.
Khamenei, who holds ultimate authority over state matters, emphasized that the U.S. proposal conflicts with Iran’s commitment to self-sufficiency. He made no mention of suspending the negotiations, indicating that the dialogue will continue despite this major disagreement.
Although progress has been made on certain technical aspects, Iran’s refusal to halt enrichment and export its enriched uranium presents a significant obstacle. International observers say that finding a compromise will require both sides to address these core concerns while preserving each party’s strategic interests.
