The Israeli military intensified operations around Gaza City on Wednesday, as U.S. President Donald Trump prepared to host a White House meeting on post-war plans for the devastated Palestinian territory.
Israel faces growing pressure both domestically and internationally to end its nearly two-year military campaign in Gaza, where the United Nations has declared a famine.
Mediators have circulated a truce proposal that has been accepted by Hamas, the Palestinian militant group whose October 2023 attack sparked the war. Israel, however, has not yet issued an official response.
On the ground, Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least 24 people on Wednesday.
The Israeli military said its troops were operating on the outskirts of Gaza City “to locate and dismantle terror infrastructure sites.” The army is preparing for a broader offensive to capture the city.
Amid warnings from aid groups about the risks of expanding the Israeli attacks, the army’s Arabic-language spokesman, Avichay Adraee, stated on X that the evacuation of Gaza City was “inevitable.”
