US and Ukrainian officials are holding discussions about the possibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visiting Washington next week, according to a report by CBS News on Sunday.
The potential trip is tied to President Donald Trump’s effort to secure a Ukraine peace deal by the Thanksgiving holiday. Officials familiar with the talks said Zelenskyy’s final decision will depend on the outcome of negotiations currently underway in Geneva.
Peace Talks in Geneva Shape Decision
Diplomats in Geneva are examining a 28-point US peace proposal that has sparked controversy. The draft plan calls for Ukraine to give up territory, reduce the size of its armed forces, and drop its pursuit of NATO membership.
A senior White House official noted that no final arrangements for a Washington visit exist yet, as negotiations remain active. Another option emerging from the talks is a potential meeting between US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll and Russian officials.
Pressure From Washington
President Trump has asked Zelenskyy to respond to the proposal by Thursday. He also criticized Ukraine’s leadership for showing what he described as “zero gratitude” for US efforts to end the war with Russia.
In response, Zelenskyy said he must choose between “losing our dignity or risking the loss of a key partner,” highlighting the difficult position Ukraine faces.
