Zelensky Replaces Head of Ukraine’s Security Service
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reshaped the leadership of the country’s Security Service (SBU) by removing its influential chief, Vasyl Malyuk. He has appointed Major General Yevhenii Khmara as the acting head of the agency.
The move forms part of broader leadership changes as Ukraine continues to manage internal security challenges during its ongoing war with Russia.
Role of the Security Service
The SBU oversees domestic security and counter-intelligence operations. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, the agency has also expanded its role. It has carried out covert missions, including assassinations and sabotage operations inside Russian territory.
As a result, the SBU has become one of Ukraine’s most powerful institutions during the conflict.
Malyuk’s Tenure and Record
Vasyl Malyuk led the Security Service from 2022 and earned recognition for directing high-profile operations against Russian targets. In addition, he oversaw an internal crackdown aimed at removing suspected Russian double agents from within the agency.
However, despite his influence and operational successes, President Zelensky has now decided to install new leadership at the top of the service.
Ongoing Leadership Reshuffles
This change marks the latest in a series of senior reshuffles introduced by Zelensky since the war began. Throughout the conflict, the president has repeatedly adjusted Ukraine’s security and military leadership to respond to evolving battlefield and intelligence demands.
Officials have not yet provided further details on the reasons behind the latest appointment or on how long Khmara will remain in the acting role.
