Russian and Omani Diplomats Warn Against Escalation of Tensions in Iran
Phone call focuses on regional stability
ISTANBUL — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation on Friday with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Hamad Al Busaidi, during which both leaders discussed rising tensions in Iran and the risk of broader regional instability.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the talks focused on the situation in Iran, which Moscow described as being intentionally fueled from outside and carrying the danger of escalating into a large-scale regional conflict.
Call to prevent external interference
During the discussion, both ministers stressed the need to prevent such an outcome. They emphasized that interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states violates the core principles of the United Nations Charter and increases the risk of further instability.
Lavrov and Al Busaidi agreed that restraint and dialogue remain essential to reducing tensions and safeguarding regional security.
Support for dialogue in Yemen
In addition to Iran, the ministers expressed support for renewed international efforts to promote a broad and inclusive intra-Yemeni dialogue. They said the process should take place under United Nations supervision to help create conditions for a lasting political settlement.
Broader cooperation discussed
The two diplomats also reviewed ways to further strengthen Russian-Omani relations, highlighting cooperation across political, economic, and regional issues.
Regional tensions remain high
The call took place amid growing concerns over a potential US military strike on Iran. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced support for protesters in Iran, where anti-government demonstrations have continued since last month. However, he adopted a more measured tone during remarks at the White House earlier this week.
Iranian officials have accused the United States and Israel of backing unrest and violence linked to the protests.
Meanwhile, a US-based human rights organization reported that at least 2,677 people were killed and nearly 19,100 detained during the demonstrations. Iranian authorities have not yet released official figures.
