OTTAWA: Canada is set to select Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), in partnership with Norway, as the preferred bidder for its next-generation submarine program, according to multiple reports.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce the decision in Halifax, ending months of speculation over the multibillion-dollar defense project. The agreement will begin exclusive contract negotiations with the German-Norwegian consortium to replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s aging Victoria-class submarines.
The proposed fleet of 12 submarines is expected to strengthen Canada’s naval capabilities and support its long-term defense modernization plans. The decision also aligns Ottawa more closely with European defense partners ahead of the upcoming NATO Summit.
The German-Norwegian bid was selected over South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean proposal. If negotiations are unsuccessful, Canada could reopen discussions with the second-ranked bidder.
