Rescue Attempt Ends in Double Fatality

MONTREAL: Two people have died after being pulled from the Lachine Canal following an overnight rescue operation in Montreal.

Emergency crews responded near René-Lévesque Park shortly after midnight after reports that one person had fallen into the canal. Authorities believe a second individual entered the water in an attempt to rescue the first.

Firefighters and the Canadian Coast Guard launched a search using rescue boats and sonar equipment, locating both individuals several hours later. They were transported to hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to their injuries.

The Quebec Coroner’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
