Buckling Beams Force Evacuation of Midtown NYC Construction Site

Manhattan Building Instability Clears Workers, Nearby Residents

Structural Concerns at Manhattan High-Rise Prompt Widespread Evacuations

A major construction site in Midtown Manhattan was evacuated on Tuesday after structural beams inside a high-rise building showed signs of failure, prompting emergency officials to clear surrounding properties as a safety precaution.

The incident occurred at a former pharmaceutical office tower on East 42nd Street, which is currently being redeveloped into residential apartments. Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 8 a.m. local time when construction workers reported visible cracks within the structure.

Upon arrival, firefighters and structural experts identified significant damage around the building’s upper levels, including buckled support columns, multiple cracks, and sagging floors. Officials said the steel framework had begun bending under excessive stress, raising concerns about the building’s stability.

According to fire department officials, movement within the structure continued even after emergency crews reached the scene, leading authorities to establish a large safety perimeter around the site.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that every construction worker was safely evacuated and accounted for, with no injuries reported. As a precaution, several neighboring buildings—including a hotel and a nearby school—were also evacuated while engineers assessed the situation.

Police closed multiple streets surrounding the construction zone to both vehicles and pedestrians as emergency operations continued. Structural engineers are now conducting detailed inspections to determine the cause of the failure and evaluate the building’s overall integrity.

Authorities have not yet announced when the affected buildings or surrounding streets will reopen, emphasizing that public safety remains the highest priority.
