Erdogan and Finnish President Stubb Hold Bilateral Talks on NATO Summit Sidelines
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Ankara on Tuesday as leaders gathered for the opening of the 2026 NATO Summit, holding wide-ranging discussions on bilateral cooperation, regional security, and global developments.
The meeting took place at the Presidential Complex, where the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between Türkiye and Finland. Erdogan welcomed the growing momentum in bilateral trade and emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation across economic and strategic sectors.
Addressing the broader security agenda, Erdogan underlined the need for NATO allies to demonstrate unity in the face of evolving global challenges. He stressed that Türkiye’s strategic role and defense capabilities should be fully recognized within Europe’s security framework, adding that European Union security initiatives should complement NATO rather than operate independently.
The Turkish president also highlighted Ankara’s diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and peaceful solutions to ongoing conflicts, including the wars involving Ukraine and Iran. He reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza while ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian assistance to civilians.
Stubb expressed appreciation to Erdogan for hosting the NATO summit and praised Türkiye’s contributions to regional and international security. He described Türkiye as a key partner for Finland in both security and economic cooperation and welcomed Ankara’s willingness to facilitate peace negotiations aimed at securing a sustainable resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
Later in the day, Erdogan and First Lady Emine Erdogan hosted a state dinner for NATO leaders and their spouses as summit discussions continued in the Turkish capital.
The 2026 NATO Summit is focused on strengthening alliance defense commitments, expanding defense-industrial cooperation, and maintaining long-term support for Ukraine amid ongoing regional security challenges.
