CATANIA: Flights at Sicily’s Catania–Fontanarossa Airport were suspended on Monday after renewed volcanic activity at Mount Etna sent large ash clouds into the sky, disrupting air travel.
Airport authorities halted all arrivals and departures until at least 6 p.m. local time, urging passengers to confirm flight schedules with their airlines before heading to the terminal.
Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported intensified Strombolian eruptions and significant ash emissions from Mount Etna, prompting aviation officials to raise the volcanic alert level to red. The ash plume rose approximately 1.5 kilometers above the volcano before drifting southward, forcing airspace restrictions around Catania.
The latest eruption follows weeks of increased volcanic activity, with officials continuing to monitor the situation and promising further updates as conditions evolve.
