Pakistan Calls on Iran and US to Sustain Peace Talks and Honor Framework Agreement
UNITED NATIONS, July 10, 2026 — Pakistan has urged Iran and the United States to remain committed to last month’s Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, emphasizing that continued diplomacy is essential to resolving disputes and maintaining regional stability.
Speaking during a United Nations Security Council session on Friday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed concern over rising tensions in the Middle East and called on all parties to avoid actions that could further escalate the situation.
Ahmad stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path toward resolving the Iranian nuclear issue and other regional disputes. He said Pakistan supports peaceful negotiations and believes the framework agreement signed by Iran and the United States provides a practical foundation for advancing mutual understanding and long-term stability.
Describing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a viable roadmap, the ambassador urged both countries to fulfill their commitments under the agreement, warning that any interruption to the diplomatic process could complicate efforts to achieve a negotiated settlement.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s role in supporting regional de-escalation initiatives, including ceasefire efforts and diplomatic engagement with international partners. Ahmad welcomed the progress made during recent expert-level discussions under the memorandum and expressed hope that negotiations would continue constructively.
His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump said Iran had requested the continuation of talks and that Washington had agreed to resume negotiations, while also stating that the ceasefire reached between the two countries last month was no longer in effect.
Pakistan reiterated its commitment to promoting peaceful conflict resolution and encouraged all sides to prioritize diplomacy over confrontation in pursuit of lasting peace and security.
