ISTANBUL: An unidentified projectile landed close to a commercial tanker in the southern Red Sea on Sunday, prompting an investigation by maritime authorities, while the vessel and its crew remained unharmed.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre, the tanker reported observing a splash from an unknown projectile in close proximity to the ship during its transit through the strategically important waterway.
No injuries were reported among the crew, and the vessel did not sustain any visible damage. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the incident caused any environmental impact.
The UKMTO has urged ships operating in the region to remain vigilant, exercise heightened caution and immediately report any suspicious activity as investigations into the incident continue.
The latest maritime security alert comes amid growing regional tensions following threats by Yemen’s Houthi movement to target Saudi-linked shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Earlier this week, the Houthis announced restrictions on maritime navigation involving Saudi Arabia, prompting the Saudi-led coalition to pledge a strong response and strengthen security measures for commercial vessels transiting one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors.
The incident is expected to intensify concerns over the safety of international shipping routes in the Red Sea, a key gateway for global trade and energy supplies.
