US President Donald Trump on Monday demanded financial compensation from Iran, citing what he described as decades of Iranian military activities and domestic repression.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that Iran should compensate people killed or seriously injured by what he called Iranian roadside bomb attacks.
He said compensation should include payments to the families of those killed in the 2000 attack on the USS Cole, as well as thousands of other military casualties.
Trump also called for compensation for what he described as “hundreds of thousands of innocent protestors” allegedly killed by the Iranian government over the past five decades.
In a subsequent post, Trump said Tehran should also be held responsible for deaths and damage affecting people in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Gaza.
His demands came after reports that Iranian representatives were seeking compensation for losses resulting from the five-month regional war launched by the US and Israel on Feb. 28.
Trump rejected Iran’s claims, saying compensation for Tehran had not been discussed during negotiations. He added that he had directed US representatives to include Washington’s compensation demands in all future talks.
