A Belgian court has extended the pre-trial detention of a Canadian woman of Chinese origin who is suspected of espionage while working as an intern at NATO’s military headquarters in Mons.
Belgium’s Chamber of Indictments decided to keep the woman in custody for another month after reviewing her appeal against an earlier detention decision, according to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The woman was arrested as part of a federal judicial investigation into alleged espionage activities. Belgian media reported that she attracted the attention of security officials while working at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, commonly known as SHAPE.
Prosecutors said the investigation involves allegations of espionage on behalf of a foreign country and possible involvement in a criminal organization.
Authorities have not revealed the specific activities the woman is accused of carrying out or identified the country that allegedly benefited from the suspected espionage.
