In 2021, Vienna Luke took part in an unusual undercover RCMP operation aimed at obtaining evidence against the man accused of sexually assaulting her 14 years earlier.
Luke, a fitness instructor and mother of two, disguised herself with a large jacket, hood and sunglasses before being taken by plainclothes RCMP officers to a secret meeting. Her role was central to an investigation that sought to secure a criminal conviction in a historic sexual assault case.
Police gave Luke the code name Agent Layla and treated her as an undercover operative in her own case. Investigators believed the operation could provide a crucial breakthrough, but they also knew that failure could make it extremely difficult to pursue the case after so many years.
During the 70-minute meeting, Luke confronted her estranged brother-in-law, whom she accused of assaulting her. While being monitored and recorded by police officers nearby, she questioned him about the incident and succeeded in obtaining a confession.
The RCMP described the operation as highly unusual, particularly because victims are rarely placed directly into undercover investigations involving sexual assault.
Sgt. Joëlle LaChance, who led the investigation, said the success depended heavily on Luke’s determination and the investigative team’s commitment to the case.
The confession exceeded the expectations of officers monitoring the conversation from a nearby hotel room. Members of the undercover team were deeply affected by the breakthrough, with one officer describing Luke’s actions as taking control of her life back.
The case demonstrated the extraordinary role Luke played in helping investigators uncover evidence in a sexual assault that had remained unresolved for more than a decade.
