US First Lady Melania Trump announced the successful completion of a humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, a city under Russian control in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. The temporary suspension of hostilities enabled the delivery of essential humanitarian assistance and the evacuation of nearly 800 people.
In a statement shared on X on Sunday, Trump described the operation as a success and praised Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation in making the humanitarian mission possible. She also expressed hope that the initiative could become a starting point for achieving a permanent peace agreement between the two countries.
According to Trump, the ceasefire began on October 27 and concluded as scheduled on November 1.
Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, also confirmed the conclusion of the arrangement, stating that both sides had fulfilled their commitments throughout the operation.
Lubinets explained that the temporary halt in fighting allowed humanitarian supplies to reach Oleshky and provided civilians wishing to leave the city with an opportunity to evacuate safely.
He added that the operation was conducted through cooperation with Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova under the coordination of the US first lady.
Lubinets further revealed that discussions were underway with Lantratova to identify opportunities for additional humanitarian operations. He stressed the importance of maintaining communication and cooperation between the two sides to protect civilians, provide assistance and save lives.
