Air India CEO Calls Airspace Restrictions a Major Challenge
NEW DELHI: Air India’s Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson said on Wednesday that restricted airspace has become a serious challenge for the airline’s on-time operations.
Operational and Delivery Delays
Wilson explained that Air India is facing delays in new aircraft deliveries and difficulties caused by airspace closures linked to geopolitical tensions. Since April, Pakistan has banned Indian-owned and operated airlines from using its airspace, following heightened tensions with New Delhi.
CEO Addresses Aviation Event
Speaking at an Aviation India event in the capital, Wilson remarked, “Airspace constraints are a challenge to on-time performance.” It was his first public appearance since the Boeing Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad in June.
He added, “We continue to look for ways to improve. This year will be challenging from a business standpoint, but we’re cooperating closely with investigators.”
Pakistan’s Response to Treaty Suspension
On April 24, Pakistan announced a series of measures, including the closure of its airspace to Indian airlines, after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty. The move has affected flight routes, schedules, and operational costs for Indian carriers, particularly Air India.
