The United States has expressed support for Iraq’s efforts to bring all armed groups and weapons under exclusive state authority, signaling backing for Baghdad’s broader security consolidation strategy.
The position was conveyed during a meeting in Istanbul involving US Charge d’Affaires Joshua Harris and Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji. According to a statement from Araji’s office, both sides reviewed regional and international developments alongside ongoing security challenges.
Officials highlighted recent moves by Iraq’s Coordination Framework, the country’s largest parliamentary bloc, which endorsed government measures aimed at centralizing control over weapons. The bloc described this direction as a step toward strengthening sovereignty and national stability.
The US side reportedly welcomed this shift, calling it a meaningful development that could reinforce Iraq’s independence and internal security. Washington reiterated its support for efforts that ensure weapons remain under the authority of the Iraqi state.
Discussions also covered continued bilateral cooperation between Baghdad and Washington, with both parties emphasizing shared interests and long-term partnership.
Additionally, Iraq’s Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement announced plans to integrate its weapons into state institutions, following similar commitments from other armed groups, including elements aligned with the Sadrist movement’s earlier decisions.
