A Calgary couple has appeared in court after being charged with indignity to a dead body following the discovery of human remains inside their condominium. Court documents allege that Michael Lee, 49, and his wife Helen Lee, 50, improperly handled and stored human remains in containers.
Police officers discovered the remains while conducting a welfare check at the couple’s residence in the Skyview Ranch neighbourhood of northeast Calgary earlier this week. According to court records, the alleged offence occurred between October 23 and October 27, 2026.
During Friday’s court proceedings, both accused appeared following interviews with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Ken Hashman. The doctor raised serious concerns about Michael Lee’s mental condition, suggesting he may be experiencing a psychotic disorder that could affect his ability to stand trial.
Hashman reportedly identified signs of impaired reality perception, including possible delusions and hallucinations. He also informed the court that the couple had been living in severely overcrowded and cluttered conditions, with only a narrow passage available for movement inside the condominium.
Investigators reportedly discovered human body parts inside two storage bins. The psychiatrist further stated that the couple had been living with the woman whose remains were found. Calgary police previously confirmed that they were working to establish the woman’s identity and determine the circumstances surrounding her death. An autopsy was scheduled, but its findings have not yet been made public.
During the assessment, Michael reportedly made unusual statements, including claims that an apocalypse was approaching and that he was the King of Canada. He also expressed concerns about changes in the sky while addressing the courtroom.
Justice Van de Veen ordered Michael Lee to undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre. The evaluation will establish whether he understands court proceedings and can properly assist his legal counsel.
Meanwhile, the psychiatrist reported no concerns regarding Helen Lee’s fitness to stand trial. She is scheduled to return to court next week, while her husband is expected to appear again after completing his assessment toward the end of November.
