Canada Revenue Agency has confirmed that eligible Canadians will receive a one-time grocery support payment on June 5 as part of a broader cost-of-living relief plan.
The payment forms part of the newly introduced Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which is expected to replace the existing GST HST credit system. Authorities say the measure is designed to provide immediate financial assistance to over 12 million individuals with low to moderate incomes, helping them manage rising daily expenses until the new program is fully implemented.
According to officials, the initiative aims to ease short-term financial pressure while transitioning to a more comprehensive support framework.
Mark Carney first announced the benefit in January, outlining plans to increase the current GST credit by 25 percent. In addition, the government will issue a one-time payment equal to half of this year’s GST credit to qualifying recipients.
The move reflects ongoing efforts by the federal government to address affordability challenges and support households facing higher living costs.
