ISTANBUL: A Thai-flagged vessel was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday after allegedly attempting to transit the strategic waterway without authorization from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, according to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.
Citing an informed source, Tasnim reported that the vessel ignored warnings issued by the IRGC Navy and attempted to pass through the strait without receiving the required authorization. Iranian forces reportedly intercepted the ship before carrying out the strike, preventing it from continuing its passage.
The report did not disclose the identity of the vessel or provide details about casualties, injuries, or the extent of any damage resulting from the incident.
Thai authorities had not issued an official response at the time of publication.
The reported attack comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region. Relations between Iran and the United States have deteriorated since February, when Washington and Israel launched coordinated military operations against Iran, prompting Tehran to respond with missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf states hosting US military assets.
Although Iran and the United States signed a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding last month aimed at reducing hostilities and advancing a long-term peace agreement, renewed confrontations over the Strait of Hormuz have reignited regional tensions and raised concerns about maritime security and global energy supplies.
