US President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the Center for American Progress over a report that questioned whether his deployment of the National Guard had helped reduce violent crime in American cities.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the report as politically motivated and said legal action was being prepared. He also suggested that some of the organization’s financial supporters could potentially be included in the lawsuit. Trump defended his administration’s record, arguing that crime has declined significantly since he took office.
The report, published on July 13, challenged the administration’s claim that it was responsible for the historic fall in violent crime. According to the study, the decline had already begun before Trump’s measures, while the deployment of National Guard troops produced no measurable effect on violent crime trends.
The think tank rejected Trump’s legal threat, describing it as an attempt to silence its work. Its president and CEO, Neera Tanden, defended the organization’s research as evidence-based and called the proposed lawsuit baseless.
