The Canadian government has released additional information about delays surrounding the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, along with details concerning the cost of the major infrastructure project linking Ontario and Michigan.
However, Harb Gill, the Conservative MP for Windsor West, said he remains dissatisfied with the government’s responses. He argued that Ottawa has yet to disclose important information about the $6.4-billion project, which became involved in political tensions between Canada and the United States earlier this year.
Gill said federal authorities have particularly refused to provide details about certain additional expenses associated with preparing the bridge for its opening.
Despite the limited disclosures, the government’s responses have provided some new insight into the project and the circumstances surrounding the delays.
The bridge became part of wider Canada-US tensions after US President Donald Trump threatened in February to prevent its opening.
The controversy also followed lobbying efforts and substantial political donations to Republicans by the owners of the nearby Ambassador Bridge, adding another dimension to the dispute over the new Windsor-Detroit crossing.
