US Approves Potential $2.68 Billion Bomb Sale to Canada
The U.S. State Department has approved a proposed sale of air‑strike weapons and related equipment to Canada, valued at approximately US $2.68 billion, the Pentagon announced on Thursday. The move marks a significant step in strengthening defense ties between the two nations.
Under the agreement, the main contractors responsible for supplying the equipment will be Boeing Co. and RTX Corporation.
Key Components of the Sale
Canada’s request includes a wide range of munitions and support items, designed to enhance its air‑strike capabilities. The package comprises:
-
Up to 3,108 GBU‑39 small‑diameter bombs (SDB‑I)
-
Up to 3,414 BLU‑111 500‑lb general‑purpose bombs
-
Up to 220 BLU‑117 2,000‑lb bombs and 146 I‑2000 penetrator warheads
-
More than 5,000 guidance kits (JDAM and related components) to convert conventional bombs into precision-guided munitions
-
Additional items including practice bombs, inert test vehicles, fuzes, sensors, spare parts, technical support, training aids, and software documentation
The deal also provides logistical, engineering, and contractor support services, ensuring Canada can efficiently operate and maintain the weapons systems.
Purpose and Strategic Importance
The U.S. government stated that the sale will strengthen Canada’s defense capabilities, enhance its ability to deter regional threats, and improve military compatibility with U.S. forces. It is also part of a broader strategy to reinforce continental defense goals shared by both countries.
Although the approval represents a major step, the sale will only proceed after Canada formally accepts the offer and obtains Congressional authorization in the United States.
