Chicago Marathon 2024 Shatters Record with $683 Million Impact

2024 Chicago Marathon Breaks Economic Records with $683 Million Boost

CHICAGO — The 2024 Chicago Marathon delivered a record-breaking economic windfall of $683 million to the metropolitan area, according to a new analysis released by Bank of America, the event’s primary sponsor.

The surge marks a significant 22% increase from the 2023 economic impact, which had previously set the record at approximately $550 million. This year’s marathon honored the late Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya, who made history in 2023 by breaking the world record in the men’s marathon.

Economist Don Jones, whose firm conducted the study for Bank of America, attributed the sharp rise in economic impact to increased participation and a notable influx of international visitors. “International runners tend to stay longer and spend more, significantly enhancing local economic activity,” Jones explained.

The marathon’s influence extended across various sectors including hospitality, retail, restaurants, and transportation, contributing to one of the most economically successful sporting events in the city’s history.

As one of the world’s premier distance races, the Chicago Marathon continues to draw global attention, boosting tourism and solidifying its role as a major economic engine for the city.
