Deadly Shooting in Pahalgam: 26 Killed in IIOJK Tourist Hub

Modi Condemns 'Heinous Act', Promises Swift Justice After Region’s Worst Civilian Attack in Decades

April 23, 2025 | PAHALGAM (News Desk)At least 26 people were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam, a popular hill station in Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), in what is being described as the deadliest attack on civilians in the region since 2000, according to security sources cited by AFP.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, cut his trip short following the tragic incident. He took to social media platform X to denounce the assault, vowing that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

“Those behind this heinous act will not be spared. Our fight against terrorism is unwavering and will only strengthen,” Modi posted.

The mass shooting occurred just a day after Modi hosted U.S. Vice President JD Vance in New Delhi, who is currently touring India with his family.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror. A local tour guide, Waheed, said he helped transport the injured on horseback. Another witness noted the attackers appeared to spare women during the onslaught. Reports also suggest that foreign nationals may be among the victims, though no official confirmation has been released.

Pahalgam, known for its serene landscapes, lies about 90 kilometers from Srinagar and is a key summer destination. The brazen attack has heightened tensions in the disputed region and raised concerns over security amid the ongoing conflict.
