Erdogan: Türkiye’s Strongest Response to Israel’s Actions

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized that Türkiye has delivered the most decisive response to Israel’s actions in Palestine, halting trade as part of its stance. Ankara suspended trade with Israel in May, pointing to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where more than 43,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since last October. Erdogan argued that ongoing arms shipments to Israel fuel its aggression, worsening conditions in Palestine and Lebanon.

Erdogan proposed that advocating for Palestine’s recognition as a state could counter Israel’s actions, adding that without a two-state solution, peace remains elusive. He underscored the importance of diplomatic efforts to apply pressure on Israel, emphasizing that Türkiye’s trade restrictions and other sanctions are vital to the struggle. Erdogan called for a “humanitarian alliance” to avoid the judgment of history on those who support or ignore oppression.

At the UN, Türkiye has initiated an appeal to halt weapon shipments to Israel, which has gained support from 52 nations and two international organizations. Türkiye also garnered commendations for its humanitarian efforts at a recent Arab-Muslim summit in Riyadh, where a resolution encouraged Arab League members to join Türkiye’s UN initiative.

Erdogan held strategic bilateral meetings during recent visits to Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan, discussing regional developments, including Türkiye’s zero-emissions target for 2053. He highlighted Türkiye’s Zero Waste initiative, led by First Lady Emine Erdogan since 2017, which aims to raise awareness of sustainable waste management and climate action.

On U.S.-Türkiye relations, Erdogan expressed optimism for improved ties under President-elect Donald Trump, noting potential collaboration in energy, technology, and infrastructure to expand trade and investment. He also indicated openness to working with tech leaders, including Elon Musk, to further Türkiye’s technological advancements.

Discussing regional security, Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to counterterrorism operations in Syria, stressing that Türkiye respects Syria’s territorial integrity but remains ready to respond to threats along its borders. He highlighted Türkiye’s ongoing anti-terrorism efforts against groups like the PKK and its Syrian affiliate, the YPG, which Türkiye considers a threat to regional stability.

Erdogan also warned that Israel’s regional influence and proximity to Syria could escalate tensions, urging Syria to address security threats. He reflected on Türkiye’s recent military operations in northern Syria, which have aimed to secure the border and facilitate the peaceful resettlement of civilians.
