G20: Ceasefire, Climate Action, Ultra-Rich Tax

G20 leaders have called for comprehensive ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing the need for global cooperation on climate change, poverty alleviation, and taxing the ultra-wealthy.

The summit, held Monday in Rio de Janeiro, gathered leaders from the world’s largest economies to address critical global challenges amid rising tensions and the impending return of Donald Trump as U.S. president.

Discussions were largely dominated by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, especially after the U.S. approved Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles to target Russian territory. In their final declaration, leaders endorsed initiatives for a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace” in Ukraine, opposing the use of force for territorial gains. However, the statement avoided directly condemning Russian aggression.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, under an ICC arrest warrant, did not attend. Russia was instead represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
