German Left Party Calls Gaza Offensive ‘Genocide’

Germany Opposition Party Takes Strong Stance on Israel Gaza War

German Left Party Labels Israel’s Gaza Offensive as ‘Genocide’ in Landmark Resolution

Germany’s opposition Left Party has formally described Israel’s military operations in Gaza as “genocide” for the first time, following a resolution passed by a large majority at its national convention in Potsdam.

According to German media reports, the party’s resolution states that international organizations, human rights groups, and legal experts increasingly classify the situation in Gaza as genocide against Palestinians, and that the party aligns itself with this assessment.

The statement emphasized that the party continues to support the right of both Israel and Palestine to exist. It underlined Israel’s historical significance as a refuge for Jewish people, while also affirming equal rights and self-determination for Palestinians.

The resolution reflects a rare and significant political position within Germany, where public debate over the Gaza conflict has remained highly sensitive due to historical and diplomatic considerations.

Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Palestinian authorities report that the offensive has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, with women and children making up a large proportion of casualties.

Although a ceasefire has been officially in place since October 2025, reports indicate that sporadic attacks and restrictions have continued, leading to further casualties and injuries in the territory.

The Left Party’s statement adds to growing international political debate over the nature of the conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as calls for accountability and renewed diplomatic efforts continue to intensify.
