Google Services Restored After Widespread Outage Hits Millions
Access to Google services was restored Thursday after a widespread outage disrupted millions of users across dozens of countries. Platforms affected included YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Chrome, and Google Translate, leaving individuals and businesses temporarily unable to access essential online tools.
The monitoring site DownDetector reported a surge in outage complaints around 10 a.m. local time (0700 GMT). The disruption lasted roughly one hour, easing by 8 a.m. GMT, before services gradually returned to normal.
Turkish Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister Omer Fatih Sayan confirmed the outage affected Türkiye and much of Europe. “Google, Android, and related services are experiencing an outage spanning Türkiye and Europe,” he said. The National Cyber Incident Response Center requested a technical report from Google and is closely monitoring the situation.
The outage impacted countries including Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Croatia, Serbia, Armenia, Romania, the Netherlands, Germany, and 38 others. In addition, some users reported temporary issues with Spotify, highlighting the interconnected nature of online services.
While Google has not commented on the cause, experts say such incidents illustrate the vulnerability of cloud-based platforms and the potential ripple effects on global communications, business operations, and personal connectivity.
The outage also sparked discussions on the need for backup systems and improved incident response plans to reduce downtime during major disruptions. Despite the interruption, services were fully restored, minimizing long-term impact on users worldwide.
