Hegseth, Lawmakers Mark U.S. Space Command Relocation to Alabama

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth joined members of Congress and senior military leaders on Thursday to formally mark the relocation of U.S. Space Command from Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado to Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.
The ceremony took place at Redstone Arsenal, where officials unveiled signage confirming the site of Space Command’s future headquarters. The event signaled the beginning of the next phase of construction and operational planning.
Leadership Backs the Move
Before the unveiling, Hegseth delivered brief remarks supporting the decision to relocate the command. He credited the Air Force secretary for recommending Redstone Arsenal as the permanent home of Space Command.
“The Air Force secretary made the right recommendation,” Hegseth said. “This is the place to continue building space dominance—right here in Alabama.”
Hegseth emphasized that the relocation aligns with the administration’s broader goals, including peace through strength, putting America first, and applying practical decision-making.
Strong Congressional Support
U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama’s 3rd District also spoke at the event. He noted that the decision had strong backing from current and former Air Force leaders.
According to Rogers, the previous two Air Force secretaries supported building the new headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, which sits near the city of Huntsville and a long-standing defense and aerospace hub.
Fast-Tracking Construction
Hegseth stressed that the ceremony was not merely symbolic. Instead, he described it as a clear signal that construction must move forward without delay.
“This is common sense,” he said. “Space Command belongs here, and we need to move quickly. We will cut through red tape and bureaucracy to get this headquarters built as fast as possible.”
He added that the department is committed to accelerating the process so the command can gain full operational capability without unnecessary delays.
Space Dominance and Future Warfare
Hegseth linked the relocation to the evolving nature of global conflict. He said future wars will depend heavily on control of the space domain.
“Once it was about controlling the skies,” he said. “Now it is about controlling space. That control will shape the future of warfare.”
He explained that establishing the headquarters quickly will strengthen U.S. deterrence and ensure readiness if conflict becomes unavoidable.
Background on Space Command
President Donald Trump officially announced the relocation of U.S. Space Command to Alabama on Sept. 2, 2025. Space Command is one of the U.S. military’s 11 unified combatant commands.
The command was first established in September 1985 but was disbanded in October 2002, when its responsibilities moved to U.S. Strategic Command. Trump reestablished Space Command in August 2019 during his first term.
