Hormuz Tanker Incident Under Investigation

Tanker Catches Fire Near Oman Coast

A tanker traveling through the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unidentified projectile on Thursday, resulting in a fire aboard the vessel, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency.

The agency said it received a third-party report of the incident at 1750 GMT. The tanker’s crew was reported to be safe, although authorities had not yet determined the full extent of the damage or whether the incident caused any environmental impact.

Earlier, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, citing local sources, reported that a supertanker capable of carrying around 2.5 million barrels of oil had been struck approximately 8 kilometres off the coast of Oman and caught fire.

Fars reported that the tanker had been traveling through what it described as an unauthorized route in the Strait of Hormuz. Authorities were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
