Israel Completes Iron Beam Laser Defense
Sept. 18, 2025 | Jerusalem
Breakthrough in Defense
Israel’s Ministry of Defense, the Air Force, and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems have finished developing the Iron Beam, a high-power laser defense system. Elbit Systems supplied the laser source.
Tests in southern Israel showed the system shooting down rockets, mortars, drones, and aircraft. The trials ended development and cleared the way for delivery to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later this year.
How It Works
Iron Beam is a ground-based laser built to stop short-range threats. It uses fast optics and precise targeting to destroy incoming objects in seconds.
Unlike missiles, the laser costs very little to operate. It will join Israel’s defense network with Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow. Officials say it is the world’s first fully ready high-power laser system.
Combat Use
Prototypes have already been used in combat, stopping dozens of attacks. Now, after full trials, the IDF will expand its use across more units.
Reactions
-
Defense Minister Israel Katz called Iron Beam a “historic milestone,” saying it gives Israel fast and almost cost-free defense.
-
Maj. Gen. Amir Baram said the laser will work with missiles for stronger, cheaper protection.
-
Dr. Daniel Gold praised teamwork between defense firms and startups.
-
Brig. Gen. Yehuda Elmakayes said the project marks “the beginning of the laser era.”
Rafael’s Role
Rafael executives called Iron Beam a global first.
-
Chairman Dr. Yuval Steinitz said Rafael is the first company to deliver an operational laser of this kind.
-
CEO Yoav Tourgeman said it will change defense with speed, accuracy, and low cost.
What’s Next
The IDF will receive the first Iron Beam units by year’s end. Officials say the system will boost Israel’s security and set a new global standard in air defense.
