India Questions Telegram and Signal Usernames

India Flags Fraud Risks Over Messaging Usernames

India Raises Fraud Concerns Over Telegram and Signal Username Features

India has expanded its scrutiny of messaging platforms by seeking explanations from Telegram and Signal over their username features, citing concerns about fraud, identity theft and online impersonation.

According to local reports, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has asked both companies to clarify how their username systems protect users from scams and misuse. Officials reportedly questioned the necessity of the feature and requested details on the safeguards in place to prevent fraudulent activity.

The move comes shortly after the Indian government asked Meta to delay the rollout of WhatsApp’s upcoming username feature in the country while authorities review its potential security implications.

Officials directed Meta to submit a detailed explanation of the feature within three days and advised the company not to introduce the update in India until consultations with the government are completed.

WhatsApp has defended the new functionality, stating that it includes multiple security measures designed to reduce the risk of impersonation and fraud. The feature will allow users to communicate using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers, offering greater privacy during conversations. The rollout is expected to take place gradually over the coming months.

Meanwhile, Indian authorities have also launched an investigation into an alleged leak involving confidential information related to Apple’s unreleased iPhone 18 Pro.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan confirmed that officials are examining the reported breach, including allegations that sensitive information may have been leaked from Apple supplier Tata Electronics.

The investigations reflect India’s growing focus on strengthening digital security, user privacy and data protection as technology companies introduce new communication features and products.
