Iran Holds State Funeral for Senior Military Leaders Killed in Israeli Strikes
TEHRAN —
Iran held a large-scale funeral procession in Tehran on Saturday for dozens of senior military officials and commanders who were killed in Israeli airstrikes during a 12-day conflict that has significantly heightened tensions across the region.
Crowds gathered at Enqelab (Revolution) Square to mourn the loss of 60 individuals, including high-ranking figures from the Iranian military. The ceremony featured the coffins of top military leaders, such as General Mohammad Bagheri, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces; Major General Hossein Salami, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC); and Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, head of the IRGC Aerospace Force.
The procession began at Enqelab Square and is expected to continue toward Azadi (Freedom) Square, a location symbolic of national unity. The state funeral marks a moment of national mourning and reflects the gravity of the losses suffered by Iran’s military leadership in the opening days of the conflict.
