US Signals Confidence in Iran Nuclear Agreement While Maintaining Military Readiness
The United States has expressed optimism about ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran, while emphasizing that all options remain available should diplomatic efforts fail to deliver a lasting agreement.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday after attending D-Day anniversary events in Paris, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington believes a significant breakthrough in talks with Tehran could be on the horizon. He noted that the administration remains committed to preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon through diplomatic channels.
Hegseth stressed that President Donald Trump is focused on securing an agreement capable of permanently blocking Iran’s path to nuclear arms. At the same time, he underscored that the United States is fully prepared to take necessary measures if negotiations do not achieve their objectives.
The defense secretary reaffirmed Washington’s determination to ensure regional stability and safeguard international security interests. He also addressed concerns about maritime activity in the Middle East, warning that any threats to commercial shipping routes would be met with a firm response from the United States.
According to Hegseth, shipping operations across the region continue without major disruption, reflecting ongoing efforts to maintain freedom of navigation and protect global trade corridors.
Despite the strong warning, the administration remains hopeful that diplomatic engagement will produce a successful outcome. Hegseth described the prospects for an agreement as encouraging, suggesting that a deal could emerge in the near future.
In addition to discussing Iran, Hegseth revealed that a review of the United States’ 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan is approaching completion. He stated that preliminary findings from the assessment are expected to be released soon, potentially shedding new light on one of the most debated foreign policy decisions of recent years.
The developments come as Washington continues balancing diplomatic outreach with strategic deterrence, seeking both regional stability and long-term security guarantees in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
